An EMI calculator takes ten seconds to use and can save you years of financial stress. Yet most people only use it to see "what EMI I will get", not to decide how much to borrow and for how long. This guide shows how to use an EMI calculator properly before taking a personal loan, with real numbers, so you borrow an amount you can repay on time, which also protects your CIBIL score.

Quick answer: Enter the loan amount, the yearly reducing interest rate and the tenure in months. Then look at three numbers: the EMI, the total interest and the total repayment. Try two or three tenures and amounts, and choose the one where all your EMIs together stay within about 40 to 50% of your in-hand salary while you still keep some savings. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the total cost.

What the EMI calculator needs

Input What to enter Tip
Loan amount The amount you want to borrow Borrow only the gap you cannot cover otherwise
Interest rate Yearly reducing rate A flat rate looks lower: 12% flat is roughly 21% reducing
Tenure Number of months Try at least two options

Open our EMI calculator in another tab and follow along.

Same loan, different tenures

Loan of ₹2,00,000 at 18% a year (reducing):

Tenure EMI Total interest Total repayment
24 months about ₹9,985 about ₹39,600 about ₹2,39,600
36 months about ₹7,230 about ₹60,300 about ₹2,60,300

The 36-month loan has an EMI about ₹2,750 lower, but costs about ₹20,700 more in total. Choose the shortest tenure whose EMI you can comfortably pay every month.

Same loan, different rates

Loan of ₹2,00,000 for 24 months:

Rate EMI Total interest
18% a year about ₹9,985 about ₹39,600
24% a year about ₹10,574 about ₹53,800

A 6-point higher rate adds about ₹14,000 to the cost. This is why improving your profile before borrowing, or choosing a cheaper loan type, matters.

The salary check: how much EMI is safe?

  1. Write down your in-hand salary.
  2. Add up all the EMIs you already pay, including credit card EMIs.
  3. Add the new EMI from the calculator.
  4. Keep the total within about 40 to 50% of your in-hand salary.

Example: in-hand salary ₹40,000, existing EMI ₹6,000. Keeping total EMIs within 45% (₹18,000) leaves room for a new EMI of about ₹12,000. If the calculator shows more, lower the amount or choose a slightly longer tenure. Read how to reduce your EMI burden if you are already above this level.

Common mistakes

  • Entering a flat rate as if it were a reducing rate (a flat rate charges interest on the full amount for the whole tenure, so it costs much more)
  • Looking only at the EMI and ignoring the total repayment
  • Forgetting the processing fee, which reduces the amount you receive
  • Choosing the longest tenure by default
  • Not leaving any buffer for emergencies

How Indifunds helps

Indifunds is a loan facilitator in Noida that works with lending partners. Salaried people in Delhi NCR with an in-hand salary of ₹35,000 or more, including those with a low CIBIL score, can check personal loan options from ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh (up to ₹10 lakh for strong profiles) with tenure of 6 to 36 months. We show you the EMI and total repayment before you sign. No fee before approval; approval, amount and rate depend on eligibility, verification and the lender's final decision. Start on the low CIBIL personal loan page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EMI calculator result exact?

It is very close for a reducing-rate loan. The lender's Key Fact Statement gives the final EMI, which can differ slightly due to rounding, the first EMI date and fees.

Should I choose a lower EMI or a shorter tenure?

Choose the shortest tenure whose EMI you can comfortably pay. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases the total interest.

How much of my salary should go to EMIs?

Keep all EMIs together within about 40 to 50% of your in-hand salary, and keep some savings for emergencies.

Does the EMI calculator include the processing fee?

Usually not. Check the fee in the offer and remember that it is normally deducted from the amount you receive.

Can I reduce my EMI after taking the loan?

Sometimes, by part-prepaying or, in some cases, by restructuring with the lender. Check the charges and rules in your loan agreement first.
