Most people know how to fill in a loan form. Far fewer know what happens after they press "Submit": who checks what, why the lender calls, what the Key Fact Statement is, and when the money actually arrives. Knowing the steps helps you avoid delays, spot fraud and understand exactly what you are signing. Here is the personal loan process from first enquiry to disbursal, explained for salaried people, including those with a low CIBIL score.

Quick answer: A personal loan usually goes through seven steps: eligibility check, application, documents and KYC, credit and income assessment, verification, offer with Key Fact Statement, and agreement and disbursal to your own bank account. Delays mostly come from missing documents or details that do not match. A genuine lender never asks you to pay anything before the money reaches your account.

The 7 steps at a glance

Step What happens What you do
1. Eligibility check Basic check of salary, city, age and existing EMIs Share correct salary and EMI details
2. Application Your details are entered with the lender Use the same name, address and numbers as on your documents
3. Documents and KYC ID, address, salary slips and bank statement are collected Give clear, complete copies
4. Credit and income assessment Credit report, repayment history and income are reviewed Explain any old default or settlement honestly
5. Verification Calls or checks on your job, address and contact details Answer verification calls; inform your HR if needed
6. Offer and Key Fact Statement Amount, rate, fees, EMI and total cost are shared Read the KFS before you accept
7. Agreement and disbursal You sign the agreement and the money is sent Check the amount credited and your first EMI date

Step by step in more detail

1. Eligibility check

Before a full application, the lender or facilitator checks whether you broadly fit: your in-hand salary, how it is paid, your city, your age and the EMIs you already pay. This saves you from a rejection that adds an unnecessary enquiry to your credit report. You can do a quick check on our eligibility checker.

2. Application

Your name, date of birth, address, employer, salary and loan amount are recorded. Small mismatches, such as a different spelling of your name or an old address, are one of the most common reasons for delay later.

3. Documents and KYC

Typical documents are PAN, Aadhaar, recent salary slips and a bank statement showing salary credits. KYC may be done digitally. See the full list in documents required for a personal loan.

4. Credit and income assessment

The lender pulls your credit report and looks at your score, past repayments, current loans and recent enquiries, together with your income. With a low CIBIL score, lenders that assess the full profile look more closely at salary stability and your recent repayment behaviour.

5. Verification

You may get calls to confirm your details, and the lender may confirm your employment. Missing these calls is a simple but common cause of delay.

6. Offer and Key Fact Statement

If approved, you receive an offer. Under RBI rules for regulated lenders, you should get a Key Fact Statement (KFS) showing the annual percentage rate, all fees, the EMI, the number of instalments and the total amount you will repay. Compare the amount you will actually receive after fees with the total you will pay back. Read more in RBI digital lending guidelines.

7. Agreement and disbursal

You sign the loan agreement, often digitally. The lender then sends the money directly to your own bank account. Any processing fee is normally deducted from the loan amount at this stage, as shown in the KFS, not collected from you in advance.

What slows a loan down

  • Documents that are unclear, incomplete or do not match each other
  • Salary paid in cash or irregular salary credits
  • Missed verification calls
  • Undisclosed existing loans that appear on the credit report
  • An account that is currently overdue

Red flags at any step

Stop if anyone asks for a "file charge", "GST", "insurance" or any other payment before disbursal, asks for your OTP or UPI PIN, or wants the money sent to someone else's account. Read how to spot an advance fee scam.

How Indifunds works

Indifunds is a loan facilitator in Noida that works with lending partners. For salaried people in Delhi NCR with an in-hand salary of ₹35,000 or more, our team checks eligibility first, explains the documents needed, and walks you through the lender's offer and charges before you sign. We never collect a fee before approval. Approval, amount and rate depend on eligibility, verification and the lender's final decision. Start on the low CIBIL personal loan page.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are there in a personal loan process?

Usually seven: eligibility check, application, documents and KYC, credit and income assessment, verification, offer with Key Fact Statement, and agreement and disbursal.

Why does the lender call me after I apply?

To verify your identity, job, address and contact details. Answering these calls helps your application move faster.

What is a Key Fact Statement?

A short document from a regulated lender that shows the annual rate, all fees, the EMI, the number of instalments and the total amount you will repay. Read it before you accept any loan.

Do I have to pay anything before the loan is disbursed?

No. Genuine lenders deduct any processing fee from the loan amount at disbursal. A request for money before disbursal is a warning sign of fraud.

Can I apply with a low CIBIL score?

Yes. Some lenders assess low scores together with your salary, job and existing EMIs. The amount may be smaller and the rate higher than for a good score.
